Welcome to the world of acrylic painting! Starting a new hobby can feel overwhelming, so I’ve created a simple, affordable list of essential art supplies to help you get started.
Whether you’re new to painting or looking to refresh your supplies, these are my go-to essentials. You only need five key items to begin your painting journey, and you can always use what you have or choose items that fit your budget.
If you’re new to acrylic painting and want to learn more about the supplies listed below, read on for detailed recommendations and tips on how to use them effectively.
The foundation of any painting is the surface. I recommend starting with 8×8″ or 8×10″ canvases or canvas panels. Panels are thinner and easier to frame. If you’re looking to save money, consider using 140lb or heavier watercolor paper to prevent buckling. Just remember to gesso the paper first to ensure proper paint adhesion, as canvases come pre-gessoed.
My favorite brand of acrylic paints is Liquitex Heavy Body, which I use in nearly all my tutorials. Start with a basic set of 12 colors, including primary colors for mixing. You can also use the paints you already have or try other brands. Larger sets save time on mixing.
A good set of paintbrushes is essential for achieving the desired effects in your paintings. They don’t have to be expensive! I recommend a set that includes most of the brushes needed for my tutorials. Additionally, a 1″ wash brush is useful for painting backgrounds and larger objects.
A palette is necessary for mixing, keeping, and storing your paints. My favorite palettes are the Sta-wet palette and Red Grass XL, both of which keep your acrylics wet for an entire month. This means you can mix your paints once and use them throughout the month.
Depending on your drawing skills, I recommend graphite transfer paper for tracing and watercolor pencils for freehand sketches. Both allow for easy correction of mistakes with a bit of water on a paper towel.
While not essential, an easel is a nice addition to your painting setup. It can help you maintain proper posture and provide a comfortable angle for working on your artwork. Easels come in various styles and sizes, so you can choose one that fits your space and budget.
Yay! You’re Ready to Begin!
I hope this list boosts your confidence as you begin your acrylic painting journey. Once you have your supplies, you’re ready to start painting with me. I can’t wait to see your creations!
