In order to be successful in the completion of the tutorials, you will need a few supplies.

There is an option to do a simple drawing of flowers or you can follow further along and actually color the flowers in using watercolor paints.

  1. Sketchbook: There is no right or wrong sketchbook. Depends what you like, if you are feeling fancy then you can get a Moleskine, but there are plenty of other more affordable options if you are just starting out like this one on Amazon .
  2. Pencils:  Staedtler Mars pencils have always been my go to and favorite of all time. I have been using them since I went to art school. Some artists love to use a mechanical pencils to have thin and precise line, that is also absolutely up to you and you preference. I’d recommend this one.
  3. Eraser: As a beginner, it is crucial to have a good eraser to remove all of your mistakes. I like to have 2 earsers on me, one kneaded eraser from Faber-Castell and another normal one.
  4. Sharpener: Because if you want to have those fresh and crisp lines, you will need to have your tools sharpened and ready to go. I recommend this one.
  5. Book: It is a full guide from the artist on how to draw the flowers, where you can learn how to draw flowers off screen and in no time become a pro. Get the book now.

Peony Flowers

Peonies are renowned for their lush, full blooms and captivating beauty, making them a favorite among artists and flower enthusiasts alike. These flowers, with their intricate layers of delicate petals, provide a wonderful subject for drawing. Whether you are a beginner looking to explore the basics of floral art or an experienced artist seeking to refine your technique, learning how to draw peonies can be both a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

How to draw Peony flowers?

Step 1: Start by drawing a large, rough circle for the main bloom. This will be your guide for the overall size and shape of the peony. If you want to add a bud, draw a smaller oval next to the main circle.

Step 2: Inside the circle, sketch the petals starting from the center and working your way outwards. Peony petals are layered and overlapping, so draw multiple curved lines and shapes that mimic this structure. Focus on creating a sense of depth by varying the size and direction of the petals.

Step 3: Once the basic petal structure is in place, add finer details like the veins and edges of the petals. To give your drawing a more realistic look, add shading to create depth and dimension. Pay attention to where shadows naturally fall, especially where petals overlap. Lastly, draw the stem and a few leaves with elongated oval shapes and pointed ends to complete your peony.

How to paint peonys in watercolor?

To paint peonies in watercolor, start by lightly sketching the basic shape with a pencil, drawing a rough circle for the main bloom and an oval for a bud if desired, and outlining the layers of petals.

Prepare a light wash of your chosen color (pink, red, or white with a hint of pink) and use a round brush to paint the petals, starting from the outer edges and working toward the center, leaving some areas lighter for highlights. After the base layer dries, mix a slightly darker shade of the base color and apply it to areas where shadows and deeper tones naturally occur, such as the base of the petals and where petals overlap, using a fine brush for detailed work.

Gradually layer more color to add depth, paying attention to the petal structure, and complete the painting by adding the stem and leaves with green shades, incorporating light and dark greens for a realistic touch.
